Joss Whedon to rewrite The Avengers AND Captain America?

In some kind of cosmic justice, it has been revealed that Joss Whedon is not only in negotiations to direct Marvel’s flagship superhero flick The Avengers, but to also rewrite the script. That’s not all. Whedon will also take a pass at the script for The First Avenger: Captain America. It’s as if all the fanboys who wept over the cancellation of Whedon’s many shows threw a bundle of coins into a wishing well.

According the Pajiba, the source of this leak comes from a source close to the projects.

Little is known about writer Zak Penn’s original script for The Avengers – only that it features S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) rallying together Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and (potentially) The Incredible Hulk (Edward Norton – maybe).

Whedon has more great writing credits to his name than almost anyone working today (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, Serenity, Dr. Horrible, Toy Story). His involvement – and the inclusion of his signature style of writing – can only be seen as a good sign.

Head on over to Pajiba to read more about Whedon’s involvement in these Marvel pics, as well as the plot synopsis of The First Avenger: Captain America.

Discuss: Doesn’t this just sound better and better?

  1. It was a long time coming but Joss is finally getting the recognition he deserves. Not that his shows weren't recognised, but they weren't as much as they should have been. He's one of the greatest writers working in the industry today.

  2. Tough one. I think I will fall back on an old favourite, Firefly. Mainly due to the incredible cast and writers. It was never "Monster of the Week". You never knew if a throwaway line was going to be the meaning of life the universe and everything.

  3. Oh and why does everyone conveniently forget Alien Resurrection?

  4. Haha, Whedon himself has disowned Alien Resurrection, saying that only one line of dialogue of his survived the final cut.

  5. I know. I stand by my belief that it was at least better than Alien3. Even without him. Am definitely looking forward to his Glee ep. Kirrily
