Exit Through The Gift Shop heads to Australia

The acclaimed street art documentary Exit Through The Gift Shop will receive a limited Australian release this June through Madman Entertainment.

The film was directed by the famously enigmatic street artist Banksy. It made its debut at Sundance earlier this year, where it received rave reviews.

Exit Through The Gift Shop tells the story of Thierry Guetta, a French immigrant obsessed with documenting the burgeoning counter-culture of street art in LA. Guetta focuses his attentions on Bankys’s exploits – that is, until Banksy decides to turn the camera on Guetta himself as he tries his own hand at joining the movement.

There have been rumours that the film is not so much a documentary as it is a “prankumentary”, with many suggesting that Thierry Guetta is in fact a fabricated character.

Banksy preemptively penned a letter specifically for the film’s debut at Sundance that seems to both confirm and deny the above:

“Ladies and gentlemen, and publicists: Trying to make a movie which truly conveys the raw thrill and expressive power of art is very difficult. So we haven’t bothered. Instead, this is simply an everyday tale of life, longing, and mindless vandalism. Everything you are about to see is true, especially the bit where we all lie. Thanks for coming, please don’t give away the ending on Twitter. And please, don’t try copying any of this stuff at home, wait until you get to work.”

Most critics agree that – hoax or not – the film is an intriguing examination of the meaning of “art” (something we love to discuss here).
