In a move that is certain to shock absolutely no-one, Disney chairman Rich Ross has revealed that Pirates of the Caribbean 4 will be shot in Disney Digital 3D.
The report comes from Deadline, who state that the film’s release date will remain May 20, 2011.
Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides will be based on Tim Powers’ 1988 pirate novel, which focuses on Blackbeard and the Fountain of Youth.
Johnny Depp will reprise his Academy Award nominated role of Captain Jack Sparrow, while Geoffrey Rush will also return to the fray as the newly-non-evil Captain Barbossa.
Deadwood-alum Ian McShane will star as the villainous Blackbeard. Penelope Cruz also joins the cast as Blackbeard’s feisty (of course) daughter.
Not returning are Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom, as well as the director of the first three films, Gore Verbinski.
Nine and Chicago director Rob Marshalll will take over directorial duties.
Discuss: Will 3D pirates be enough to entice you back to this franchise? Hey, at least it’s not an up-conversion!
The thing that made me love the first movie was it's sharp wit and ingenuity, which was lacking in the last two. Unless they bring that back I don't think I'd want to pay extra for the 3D view, unless of course they have some super action sequences.
