Head to Head – Iron Man 2

Welcome to the latest edition of Head to Head, in which our Quickflix critic takes on our readers in a rip-snorting battle to the death! You pick the film, and we pick the fight!

This week, Anthony Tran joined Iron Man’s ever-growing list of foes by calling Iron Man 2 … kinda boring! For his troubles, he scored a double pass to Animal Kingdom. You can send your mini-reviews to us here at Quickflix too!

Anthony Tranwill argue AGAINST the film while Quickflix critic Simon Miraudo will argue FOR it. Let us know in the comments section below who you agree with. Spare no vitriol! Choose your side! There can only be one winner!

Anthony Tran – 2.5/5

I will say this first: I enjoyed Iron Man 2. Just enough to see it a second time. Granted, I missed the first fifteen minutes of the film after misreading times, so I thought that would justify a second screening. Boy, those fifteen minutes weren’t worth it. It made me realise that there were just too many slow filler scenes that really add nothing to the film. It was really hard to see this hyped-up sequel be relegated to just a chapter in The Avengers saga. There was just too much happening and nothing tying it all together. Nor was there anything memorable about this sequel, just a whole lot of Iron Man fan service with the appearances of War Machine and Scarlett Johansson. Those two and the first scene with Whiplash add it all up to 2.5/5 stars. This Avengers build up better be worth it.

Simon Miraudo4.5/5

I must say that I’m a little bewildered by all the Iron Man 2 hate out there. Now that the dust from Tony Stark’s return has settled, it seems that most fans of the series were severely disappointed by this new instalment (see: Anthony’s review above, obviously). But I’ve got to stick to my convictions here – I truly believe that Iron Man 2 is even better than the first. The action is better and the laughs are bigger. You have Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow at their screwball best, Sam Rockwell dancing up a storm, Garry Shandling (!) and more satisfying action sequences than Transformers 2, Terminator: Salvation and GI: Joe combined (it should be noted that the combined number of satisfying action sequences from those films is ONE – and it’s in GI Joe). Yes, Mickey Rourke and Scarlett Johansson are wasted here. But I personally loved watching the seeds being sown for The Avengers. Also, there is at least 15 more minutes of Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury than in the first film. That makes Iron Man 2 at least 15% better than Iron Man 1. It’s called the Jackson-factor. You can’t argue with science Anthony.
Now it’s over to you! What are your thoughts on Iron Man 2? Let us know in the comments section below. If you would like to be featured in the next Head to Head and possibly win some free movie tickets, send your mini-reviews to us here at Quickflix!
