The internet is abuzz with rumours that Jamie Bell has been cast as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in Sony’s reboot of the Marvel comic franchise.
The website Bleeding Cool is reporting that several sources have confirmed the Billy Elliot star’s involvement.
Neither Sony, Bell nor director Marc Webb have confirmed the rumour. However, Bell was on the leaked shortlist of Sony’s preferred actors for the role made famous by Tobey Maguire. The other contenders included Andrew Garfield, Alden Ehrenreich, Frank Dillane and Josh Hutcherson.
Last week, African American comedian and former 30 Rock writer Donald Glover campaigned (perhaps unsuccessfully) to audition for the role.
As previously reported, Spider-Man 3D will hit cinemas July 3rd, 2012. It will begin with Peter Parker as a high school student, although it is unknown whether or not it will be another origin story a’la Spider-Man 1.
Bell also scored the coveted role of Tintin in Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson‘s upcoming mo-cap adaptation of the timeless French comic.
Discuss: Does Bell sound like an appealing Peter Parker? Should Sony have given Glover a chance to audition?
Jamie Bell could be very good indeed. At least Toby Maguire's gone – he's had his day.
