See Hugh Jackman’s Real Steel

USA Today have the first image from the set of Shawn Levy‘s futuristic robot-boxing movie Real Steel starring Hugh Jackman. Look, there it is!

OK, so it’s a “futuristic robot-boxing movie”, which depending on the execution could be a really cool action film, or seem like the incomprehensible fever dream of an eight-year-old boy (not unlike Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen).

The film imagines a future in which there is no such thing as human boxers, as they have all been replaced by mechanized fighters. Although motion capture technology will be used on the robots during the fighting sequences (legendary boxer Sugar Ray Leonard is working as an adviser), 19 animatronic robots were created for the rest of the film.

Jackman plays an ex-fighter who bonds with his 11-year-old son (Dakota Goyo) while grooming a junk-yard robot named Atom for the World Robot Boxing league. The film also stars Evangeline Lilly, Anthony Mackie and Kevin Durand.

Head on over to the article at USA Today to read about Steven Spielberg‘s indirect involvement in the feature.

Levy previously directed Night at the Museum 1 and 2, as well as the recent hit comedy Date Night. Real Steel hits cinemas late 2011.

Discuss: Can Levy pull off an action film (even a family-oriented one such as this)?
