The trailer for the intimate M. Night Shyamalan-produced thriller Devil has debuted online. We previously discussed the film back in October 2009, when our only information on the plot consisted of the following logline: “A group of people are trapped in an elevator, and one of them is the devil.”
Well, from the looks of the trailer, that is precisely the film we are going to see. The film is based on an original idea by Shyamalan, written by Brian Nelson (Hard Candy) and directed by Drew and John Erick Dowdle (Quarantine).
Originally titled The Night Chronicles: Devil, the egotistical prefix was recently removed by Universal, presumably following the hilarious critical reception of Shyamalan’s last directorial effort The Last Airbender. Despite the dropping of ‘The Night Chronicles’, there are still two further films planned in this unofficial trilogy.
Don’t be frightened away from Shyamalan’s name just yet. The worst qualities of his films are his inability to write dialogue and direct actors, and here he does neither. Sure, Devil may wind up having a cringe-worthy twist, but once upon a time Shyamalan knew how to fool his audience and still have a satisfying finale.

Devil stars Chris Messina, Bokeem Woodbine, Caroline Dhavernas, Bojana Novakovic and Geoffrey Arend. It hits American cinemas in September, but Australian audiences will have to wait until February, when everyone will already know the ending.
Discuss: So, have you figured out which one is the Devil yet?
