Guillermo del Toro’s next film: The Haunted Mansion

Guillermo del Toro, suddenly with a lot of free time on his hands, has revealed his next project at Comic Con. The man behind Pan’s Labyrinth and Hellboy will try his hand at turning Disney’s Haunted Mansion ride into a feature film.

Del Toro discussed the project with The Hollywood Reporter before announcing it to the masses in San Diego.

“It’s going to be a thrill ride for the whole family but it’s definitely going to be scary…(Walt) Disney is one of the creators of some of the scariest images in my childhood. People forget that he not only made sweet images but also images of nightmare. We need to honor that side of the legacy.”

This new Haunted Mansion is in no way connected to Disney’s 2003 bomb The Haunted Mansion, which starred Eddie Murphy and is considered by almost everyone to be terrible.

Head on over to THR for more details on the project.

Del Toro was previously lined-up to direct The Hobbit, but MGM’s ongoing financial difficulties led him to abandon the project after two years of pre-production.

Discuss: What are the odds that Peter Jackson will announce the new director of The Hobbit at Comic Con in the next week or two (even if it is himself)?
