Daniel Craig cast in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

Daniel Craig has been cast in the lead (although not title) role in David Fincher‘s upcoming American remake of the Swedish film The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

As first reported by Deadline (and later confirmed by Sony Pictures) Craig will star as investigative journalist Mikael Blomkivst. Fincher has also confirmed that his remake will take place in Sweden, so we can look forward to hearing Craig’s accent very soon.

The hunt is now on for the eponymous ‘girl’ Lisbeth Salandar. According to MTV, the contenders have been narrowed down to Aussies Sophie Lowe, Emily Browning and Sarah Snook, as well as Rooney Mara.

Carey Mulligan was once considered to have the role in the bag, but she has since announced that she is no longer in the running. There were also rumours of Ellen Page, Mia Wasikowska, Kristen Stewart, Natalie Portman, Keira Knightley, Anne Hathaway, Olivia Thirlby, and Scarlett Johansson competing to portray Lisbeth.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is the first installment of Stieg Larsson’s bestselling ‘Millenium’ trilogy of novels, followed by The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets Nest.

The film version of Dragon Tattoo (directed by Niels Arden Oplev) opened in Australia earlier this year, following a hugely successful run in Scandinavia. The latter two instalments, helmed by Daniel Alfredson (brother of Let The Right One In director Tomas Alfredson), have already debuted in Sweden and are awaiting a local release. The films star Michael Nyqvist and Noomi Rapace as Mikael and Lisbeth respectively.

Fincher’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is set to hit cinemas December 2011, although plans to film remakes of Played With Fire and Hornets Nest have not yet been made.

Discuss: For those of you who have seen the original, how do you feel about Craig taking on the role of Mikael? Which actress should play Lisbeth?
