Rooney Mara is The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

David Fincher has (finally) selected a young actress to star in his upcoming remake of the hit Swedish film The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo: Rooney Mara. The report comes from Deadline, who note that Mara also appears in Fincher’s next film The Social Network.

Mara will star as cyberpunk Lisbeth Salander in the English-language adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s bestselling novel. Daniel Craig will join her as journalist Mikael Blomkvist.

Just in case you were keeping score, here are the actresses Mara reportedly beat to the role: Emily Browning, Sophie Lowe, Ellen Page, Sarah Snook, Mia Wasikowska, Katie Jarvis, Lea Seydoux, Carey Mulligan, Kristen Stewart, Natalie Portman, Keira Knightley, Anne Hathaway, Olivia Thirlby and Scarlett Johansson.

A press release from Columbia Pictures confirm that the studio intend to remake Larsson’s entire Millennium Trilogy, with Fincher at the wheel.

The Millennium Trilogy has already been adapted into feature-length films in Sweden, with Noomi Rapace starring as Salander in all three pictures. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo was released earlier this year in Australia, with The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest set for release in the coming months.

Discuss: Phew, thank goodness that is over with. How does this selection sit with you?
