Dracula: Year Zero and Mental gear up for production

Universal Pictures have announced two big-budget productions that will soon begin shooting in Australia: Alex Proyas’ long-touted Dracula: Year Zero and P.J. Hogan‘s Mental, which the director describes as “The Sound of Music on acid”.

According to Encore Magazine, Mental will reunite Hogan with his Muriel’s Wedding star Toni Collette. Mental will arrive in cinemas Christmas 2011/January 2012.

There is some mystery surrounding Proyas’ Dracula: Year Zero, although Sam Worthington is still linked to the title role. As we reported back in January:

“the film explores the origin of Dracula, combining traditional vampire mythology with the history of notorious Prince Vlad the Impaler (picture above, kinda). Dracula will be the flawed hero of the film, embroiled in a tragic love story.”

Both films will utilise local crews, locations and casts.

Read all about the projects, as well as more news from the Australian International Movie Convention where these films were announced, over at Encore Magazine.

Discuss: Which of these upcoming Aussie blockbusters are you most looking forward to?
