Aussie actor to team up with Cruise for M:I 4?

Australia’s own Chris Egan will test for the plum role of Tom Cruise‘s sidekick in Paramount Pictures upcoming Mission: Impossible 4.

According to Deadline, Egan (Home and Away, Crush, Letters to Juliet) will compete with a couple of other young actors for the role. Keven Zegers (Transamerica) and Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker) will also test for Paramount and director Brad Bird.

It was suspected that Paramount would only give the go-ahead for M:I 4 if Cruise could prove that he was still a box office draw. His latest film, Knight and Day, did not prove that. M:I 4 was given the green light regardless, but only if a) a younger character could be written into the script to play Cruise’s protege and b) Cruise would have to take a pay cut (although if the film’s a hit, he’ll clean up at the back-end).

Cruise and M:I 3-director J.J. Abrams are producing. M:I 4 will be Brad Bird’s live action debut (he previously directed the animated classics The Iron Giant, The Incredibles and Ratatouille).

Discuss: Do you buy Egan as an action star? Do you still buy Cruise as an action star?
