Kick Ass 2 is happening, says wild exaggerator.

Mark Millar has built a reputation for himself as one of the entertainment industry’s least reliable sources of information. Therefore, we take his declaration on BBC Radio that Kick Ass 2 has been greenlit with a pinch of salt.

Millar is, of course, the creator of the Kick Ass comic, and a pathological exaggerator (lest we forget his proposed 8-hour Superman saga).

He spoke to BBC Radio Five Live about the home video success of the first Kick Ass. (Thanks BleedingCool for the transcript).

“The estimate is [Kick-Ass] will do 100 to 150 million on DVD based on the American sales, you know, so it’ll end up making a quarter of a billion on a 28 million investment. So It should be okay. So the sequel’s greenlit, we can go ahead and do the follow up now, you know. The first made so much compared to what it cost it would be crazy not to.”

Not quite sure where Millar is getting his stats from, but they sound mighty big. Also, considering the film was independently financed, who is giving this “green light”? Are they now working with a studio, or were they simply awaiting approval from the original film’s investors?

Kick Ass director Matthew Vaughn and co-writer Jane Goldman are currently working on X-Men: First Class, so it seems unlikely that production on a second Kick Ass will begin anytime soon. We don’t even know if Millar has finished writing the second series of the comic.
