Trailer Debut: The Fighter

The trailer for David O. Russell‘s boxing flick The Fighter has arrived. It has long been considered a leading Oscar contender, and the trailer does nothing to dispel that assumption.

The film tells the tale of real life fighter “Irish” Micky Ward (Mark Wahlberg) and his troubled older brother and trainer Dickie Eklund (Christian Bale).

The film was originally set to be directed by Darren Aronofsky, who pulled out fearing the project was too similar to his last picture The Wrestler.

The Fighter marks Russell’s third collaboration with Wahlberg (after Three Kings and I Heart Huckabees), and it could be their first to receive some Oscar love. A prestige cast (former nominees Amy Adams and Melissa Leo also star), starring in a Rocky-esque true story, helmed by a highly respected filmmaker without even a Golden Globe on his mantle? Surely this is a lock. All that stands in its way come nomination time is, well, whether the film turns out to be good or not.

The Fighter opens in the U.S. December 10, 2010, with an Australian release to follow.
