The trailer for Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck‘s The Tourist has debuted online. This Hitchcockian-thriller stars Angelina Jolie as an Englishwoman who uses an American tourist (Johnny Depp) as a pawn in the manhunt for her criminal ex-lover.
The Tourist is a remake of the 2005 French film Anthony Zimmer, but there is also a North by Northwest-vibe here. I must say, I’m surprised by the comic tone of the trailer – I had expected something a little stuffier (I mean, look at that image).

Although Depp and Jolie are big marquee names, they were not the first actors to be involved with the project. Tom Cruise had been eyeing the titular role since mid-2008, but left the project to star in (the very similar) Knight and Day. Sam Worthington was briefly attached to star before Depp was brought on board. Similarly, Charlize Theron had been lined up to play the Englishwoman before walking away late last year.
There was also a round of musical chairs behind the camera. Bharat Nalluri (Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day) was attached to direct before The Lives of Others‘ Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck signed on.
The Tourist opens December 10, 2010 in the U.S., with an Australian release to follow.
Discuss: Does this look too much like Knight and Day?
