Sacha Baron Cohen to play Freddie Mercury

Sacha Baron Cohen has signed a deal to star as Freddie Mercury in an upcoming biopic of the Queen front man.

According to Deadline, screenwriter Peter Morgan (The Queen – how fitting!) will pen the film, which will likely focus on the band’s formation, leading to their Live Aid appearance in 1985. Production is expected to begin in 2011.

In a significant coup, the project will feature Queen’s most famous songs, including Bohemian Rhapsody and We Are The Champions (seriously, a lot of biopics get stalled due to a lack of music rights). It is unknown whether or not Baron Cohen will sing, or whether Mercury’s vocal track will be used for the songs.

Read more about the project over at Deadline.

Discuss: Baron Cohen is a phenomenal comic actor, and a dead ringer for Mercury (especially in his Borat gear). Could he be a genuine future Oscar contender?
