Inception to become a video game?

We’ve seen the movie. We’ve read the online comic. Will we soon be able to play a video game based on Christopher Nolan‘s Inception?

Nolan told journalists at a press conference in Rome ahead of the film’s Italian release that he was toying with the idea of turning his mind-heist thriller into a video game. Thanks to Variety for the transcription.

“We are looking at doing is developing a video game based on the world of the film, which has all kinds of ideas that you can’t fit into a feature film…That’s something we’ve been talking about and are looking at doing long term, in a couple of years.”

Frankly, this isn’t so preposterous. The film perfectly lends itself to a video game translation, what with its multiple level structure and all the faceless and easily disposable bad guys. (You can hear me elaborate on the video game elements of Inception in my review of the film on the Trending Cinema podcast.)

The film has grossed more than US$750 million worldwide, and normally a studio would have greenlit a sequel about $150 million ago. But Inception is very much a self-contained tale that doesn’t warrant a second instalment. Nolan would be better off with a video game in which he can expand upon his unique universe, without damaging the story laid down in the original film.

Discuss: Who would you like to play? The Extractor? The Architect? The Shade? The Point Man?
