Emma Stone cast as Gwen Stacy in Spider-Man

Well, we got that wrong! As was rumoured earlier this week, Emma Stone has officially been cast in Marc Webb‘s upcoming Spider-Man reboot. But not as Mary Jane Watson, as we had all assumed (you can blame her famous red locks for that misunderstanding).

Stone will instead play the blonde Gwen Stacy, Spider-Man’s first love and the romantic lead of the new film. As previously reported, Andrew Garfield will star as Peter Parker/Spider-Man.

The news was made official today by Sony and Columbia Pictures via press release, in which Webb offers his thoughts on Stone’s casting:

“The chemistry between Andrew and Emma was stunning and made Emma the clear choice. At the heart of the story of Peter Parker is not only the amazing Spider-Man, but also an ordinary teenager who is wondering what he has to do to get the girl. Andrew and Emma will bring everything audiences expect to these roles, but also make them their own. Much to my surprise, it was fun to find out that our choice for Gwen (Emma) is also a natural blonde.”

So, what does this mean for Mia Wasikowska, Dianna Agron, Georgina Haig and Dominique McElligott, who were all rumoured to also be in the running for Gwen Stacy? Did we get that wrong also? Are they in competition for the (smaller) role of Mary Jane Watson? Will Mary Jane even be in this film?

Stay tuned Spidey fans!
