The Bourne Legacy won’t feature Jason Bourne

Last week it was revealed that Tony Gilroy (Michael Clayton) would direct the fourth instalment of the Jason Bourne saga, entitled The Bourne Legacy. The director has now shared a somewhat surprising piece of information: the film will not feature Jason Bourne (Matt Damon).

Gilroy spoke to Jeff Wells at Hollywood Elsewhere to clarify the details of his upcoming project:

“This is not a reboot or a recast or a prequel. No one’s replacing Matt Damon. There will be a whole new hero, a whole new chapter…this is a stand-alone project…Jason Bourne will not be in this film, but he’s very much alive. What happened in the first three films is the trigger for what happens. I’m building a legend and an environment and a wider conspiracy…the world we’re making enhances and advances and invites Jason Bourne’s return [down the road].”

Gilroy wrote the screenplays for The Bourne Identity (directed by Doug Liman), The Bourne Supremacy (directed by Paul Greengrass) and The Bourne Ultimatum (also helmed by Greengrass). All three films diverge significantly from Robert Ludlam’s original novels. Gilroy promises the same for his Bourne Legacy screenplay, the fourth book in the Bourne series (penned by Eric Van Lustbader).

Discuss: Would you watch a Bourne film without Jason Bourne?
