Trailer Debut: Blue Valentine

Derek Cianfrance’s Blue Valentine – starring the wildly talented Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams as a young couple struggling to keep their marriage alive – was one of the big hits of the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, and received some very nice notices after screening at Cannes a few months back.

The trailer for the apparently devastating drama has arrived online, and it is without a doubt one of the year’s best.

Short and sweet, the teaser gives away very little about the film, but could easily exist as its own short film: a beautiful little glimpse at a relationship coming together, and then falling apart.

The film was recently awarded an NC-17 rating in the U.S. (roughly the equivalent of our R18+), supposedly for a mildly-graphic, emotionally raw sex scene. This will definitely hurt the film’s box office prospects – many American theatre chains will not carry films with an NC-17 rating – but you can expect distributor Harvey Weinstein to fight the classification. Regardless, Blue Valentine should still be a big Oscar contender.

Check out the trailer below!

Blue Valentine arrives in Australian cinemas December 26, 2010, a week before it debuts in the U.S.

Discuss: In what kind of world do we restrict people under the age of 17 from seeing a sex scene, but allow 15-year-olds to see graphic, relentless torture? Oh right, this one…
