Paramount Pictures have asked producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Tony Scott to reteam for a sequel to their 1986 action classic Top Gun.
According to Vulture, Tom Cruise has agreed to return as Maverick (although in a much smaller role than in the original). Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects, Valkyrie) is set to work on the screenplay.
Rumblings of a Top Gun sequel emerged back in June, when Bruckheimer revealed to MTV that he had discussed the idea of a sequel, but admitted that nothing was in the pipeline. As he astutely noted at the time, “the aviation community has completely changed since we made the movie a long time ago.” Will Top Gun 2 focus on daring aerobatics and dog fights, or on the more modern warfare approach of carpet bombing?
Who cares? Here’s hoping the rampant homo-eroticism remains!
More news as it develops.

Discuss: Is this something you’re looking forward to, or would you prefer it if Top Gun remained merely an relic of the eighties?
