It’s official. Martin Freeman to play Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit.

After months of rumours, Peter Jackson and Warner Bros have confirmed that Martin Freeman (The Office) will star as Bilbo Baggins in their two-part adaptation of The Hobbit.

Jackson had this to say about Freeman’s casting:

“Despite the various rumours and speculation surround this role, there has only ever been one Bilbo Baggins for us…There are a few times in your career when you come across an actor who you know was born to play a role, but that was the case as soon as I met Martin. He is intelligent, funny, surprising and brave — exactly like Bilbo and I feel incredibly proud to be able to announce that he is our Hobbit.”

Head on over to Deadline to see some more Hobbit casting announcements.

The Hobbit begins principal photography February 2011. Part One will arrive in cinemas December 2012, while Part Two debuts December 2013.
