Tony Scott confirmed to direct Top Gun 2

Tony Scott has the need, the need for … well, you know where I’m heading with this. Scott has told Hitfix he intends to direct Top Gun 2, confirming his involvement with – and the existence of – this long-rumoured project.

A couple of weeks ago we discussed the news that Paramount Pictures had approached Scott and producer Jerry Bruckheimer to direct a sequel to their 1986 action classic Top Gun.

Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects, Valkyrie) is supposedly working on the screenplay, in which Tom Cruise would return as Maverick (albeit in a much smaller role).

Scott however is already preparing for the project:

“I’m not waiting for a script. I’m going to do my homework. I’m going down to I think it’s Fallon, Nevada, down near New Mexico and it’s a whole different world now…These computer geeks — these kids play war games in a trailer in Fallon, Nevada and if we ever went to war or were in the Middle East or the Far East or wherever it is, these guys can actually fly drones. They are unmanned aircraft. They operate them and then they party all night.”

According to the director, Top Gun 2 will focus on the end of the era of fighter pilots.

Scott says that he will begin shooting Top Gun 2 after completing his next (as-yet unknown) project.

Discuss: This thing is slowly, but surely coming together. Still excited?
