Daft Punk music video offers new footage from TRON: LEGACY

Last night, audiences around the world were treated to an exclusive 23-minute preview of footage from Joseph Kosinski‘s TRON: LEGACY.

The event was christened TRON Night; no doubt an attempt by Disney to mirror the success of last year’s Avatar Day, in which audiences were given a glimpse at the world of Pandora several months before that film’s release.

Avatar Day worked a treat for Fox, who saw their Avatar gross more than US$2.7 billion worldwide when it debuted in cinemas. Disney clearly hope for a similar result with TRON: LEGACY … and why wouldn’t they? The similarities between the properties are there – both are 3-D adventures that promise to transport viewers into another world. TRON LEGACY even has the same mid-December release slot as Avatar.

The footage was indeed impressive; sleek and sexy, with unobtrusive 3-D and tasty visuals. Most impressive however was the footage featuring Olivia Wilde as Quorra; she seems quirky, fun and a little unpredictable (I was reminded of Milla Jovovich in The Fifth Element). Still, it’s hard to say whether or not TRON: LEGACY will be more than just a pretty face, and the threat of the film feeling too much like a video game remains.

Of course, it’s hardly worth evaluating 23 minutes of footage on any meaningful level. So…I won’t. I’ll wait until the film arrives in cinemas December 16th, 2010.
