Daniel Day-Lewis to play Abraham Lincoln for Spielberg

Steven Spielberg has been one very busy man with Tin Tin: The Secret Of The Unicorn and War Horse set for release at the end of 2011. Showing no signs of slowing down, Spielberg has further committed to Robopocalypse. But before that gets under way he’s taking on America’s favourite dead president, Abraham Lincoln.

Spielberg and Stacey Snider (Co-Chairman and CEO of DreamWorks Studios) have announced that Daniel Day-Lewis will play the title role of the president in their upcoming film Lincoln.

You can read Spielberg and Snider’s full press release over at Deadline.

The announcement comes as something of a surprise as Liam Neeson was previously thought to be assuming the role (although Neeson himself recently admitted he was too old to play Lincoln).

Lincoln is based on the novel Team of Rivals by Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Doris Kearns Goodwin. With Tony Kushner (another Pulitzer Prize winner as well as a Tony Award winner and Academy Award nominee) penning the screenplay, Lincoln is fast becoming one of our most anticipated releases of 2012.

The film is said to focus on Lincoln’s conflict with key cabinet members in the lead up to Abolition and the end of the Civil War. Lincoln will be produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Steven Spielberg.

Filming is set to start in 2011 and the release is anticipated for the end of 2012 through Disney’s Touchstone studios.

Discuss: Is Daniel Day-Lewis the man for the Gettysburg Address?
