Channing Tatum joins Jonah Hill in 21 Jump Street

Channing Tatum has been cast in Sony’s upcoming film adaptation of the 1980s television show 21 Jump Street. Although Deadline first broke the story in November, Sony has officially announced Tatum’s involvement in the high profile project.

Tatum will star alongside Jonah Hill (who also wrote the treatment with Scott Pilgrim screenwriter Michael Bacall) as young cops who work undercover in high schools. The duo will also executive produce.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs helmers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are set to direct.

21 Jump Street is best known these days as the show that propelled its young star Johnny Depp into the public consciousness. Hill spoke to Collider about the differences between his 21 Jump Street and the TV show back in January:

“[Audiences are] not expecting what it’s going to be. It’s not a parody of the show. I’m not playing Johnny Depp’s character… I’m not saying I’m Johnny Depp. I’m not playing his character. It’s a group of people that go back to high school to deal with a drug problem. …It’s a funny movie with a lot of great action and a real story. I’ve been saying that it’s like a John Hughes movie with ‘Bad Boys’ style action.”

More casting announcements will likely be made in the coming weeks.

Discuss: Tatum and Hill as a comic crime-fighting duo. Could it work?

  1. >I just spat my coffee out. A remake of 21 Jump Street????!!!! Is Hollywood that berefit of new ideas? This is bad news. The only thing that would make it worse is that Tom Cruise is doing a cameo in it.
