>Downey Jr. sings his way to stardom

>Things have been on the up for Robert Downey Jr. ever since Iron Man (with a sequel, Tropic Thunder, Sherlock Holmes and The Avengers to name but a few follow-up projects) and there are certainly no signs of things slowing down. According to Deadline, Downey Jr. has just landed a deal with Warner Bros for an untitled musical comedy.

The film will feature music composed by Tom Kitt and a script/lyrics penned by Brian Yorkey, the duo responsible for rock-opera Next to Normal, which won three Tony awards in 2009 and a Pulitzer earlier this year.

The premise involves Downey Jr. playing one half of a songwriting duo whose big-break musical flops, bankrupting them both financially and creatively. Unsure how to claim back their fame, the two take jobs as counsellors at a theatre camp for kids which they themselves attended as children.

Joy Gorman of Anonymous Content is said to have developed the idea with Yorkey and Kitt who now have “Team Downey” on board (Team Downey is an intimate production house consisting of Robert Downey Jr. and his producer wife Susan Downey).

Looks like Downey Jr.’s days as Hollywood’s own “enfant terrible” are well and truly over and in his place, a star is re-born.

Discuss: Who will play opposite Downey Jr. in this comedy musical extraordinaire? (Is Zac Efron old enough yet…?)
