>Trailer Debut: Pirates of the Caribbean – On Stranger Tides

>The trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean – On Stranger Tides has debuted online. Although original director Gore Verbinski has walked the plank (replaced by Rob Marshall), Johnny Depp returns as the flamboyant Captain Jack Sparrow for a standalone adventure separate from the original POTC trilogy.

My level of anticipation for a new Pirates film can be classed as “hesitant” at best. Although the first picture was fun – thanks mostly to Depp’s playful performance – the second and third instalments of the saga were muddled and laborious. They successfully wore down my patience, and thus, I have few expectations for any future entries.

That being said, On Stranger Tides has a lot going for it. This time, Captain Jack is being paired with his arch-nemesis Barbossa (the equally fun Geoffrey Rush). They’ll share the screen with the vivacious Penelope Cruz and the always-awesome Ian McShane (as the villainous Blackbeard).

Interesting to hear Captain Jack’s final lines from the trailer: “Did everyone see that? Because I will not be doing that again.” If the box office for On Stranger Tides is big enough, I think he will.

Pirates of the Caribbean – On Stranger Tides (shot in 3-D) arrives in cinemas May 20, 2011. It is apparently about the hunt for the Fountain of Youth, but as everyone who has seen previous Pirates films knows, you should never expect a plot.

Discuss: Your level of anticipation is …?
