Anne Hathaway has been cast as Selina Kyle/Catwoman in the third instalment of Christopher Nolan‘s Batman series, The Dark Knight Rises.
The news of Hathaway scoring the hotly contested lead female role in TDKR was revealed via a Warner Bros. press release.
The release also stated previously confirmed actor Tom Hardy would indeed be playing a villain: Bane.
Nolan had these very press-releasey things to say:
“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story…I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman’s most formidable enemies.”
Catwoman is, of course, one of the iconic villains of DC’s Rogues Gallery. Depictions of her have varied greatly since her comic book debut in 1940; a regular adversary and an occasional lover, she was last seen sharing the screen with Bruce Wayne in 1992’s Batman Returns. Halle Berry portrayed a very loose adaptation of the character in the notoriously bad Catwoman.
Bane hasn’t quite captivated the public consciousness like Catwoman, but to fans of the comic he is considered one of Batman’s best and most imposing foes; an ultra-sane supergenius with unparalleled strength. He famously broke Batman’s back in the comic Nightfall; whether this will be visited in the film is unknown.
The Dark Knight Rises hits Australian cinemas July 19, 2012.
Discuss: So, Hathaway as Catwoman, and Hardy as Bane. Good fits?
