>Henry Cavill cast as Zack Synder’s Superman

>Our international nightmare is over! Director Zack Snyder and producer Christopher Nolan have finally selected the man to star in their Superman reboot. Warner Bros Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced today British thespian Henry Cavill will star as their Man of Steel.

Here is what Synder had to say about the casting in WB’s press release:

“In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen. I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield.”

Cavill – of TV’s The Tudors and the upcoming Tarsem film Immortals – reportedly beat fellow Brit Matthew Goode to the role. Also rans include The Social Network’s Armie Hammer, Matthew Bomer (White Collar), Joe Manganiello (True Blood) and Colin O’Donaghue.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cavill had originally auditioned to star in Superman Returns back in the mid-2000s, before being pipped at the post by Brandon Routh. He had also previous vied for Nolan’s attention last decade to star as Bruce Wayne in Batman Begins.

The as-yet-untitled Superman movie arrives in cinemas December 2012.

Discuss: Is Cavill a good choice? We’ve not seen this guy in action. Have you?

  1. >Routh was great, and Goode was ozzy in watchmen for crying out loud. Why this guy???

  2. >Excellent casting. Cavill looks the part; has the charm, intensity and acting chops to do this role its greatest justice. Just hope Snyder doesn’t focus ALL his energy into a visual feast of the eyes and ears, and is sure to also put real focus into the heart, theme and performances of this film. SUPERMAN as a hero and a story has such potential to be as much an emotional experience as a fun and entertaining one. With Nolan guiding the process, trust the best incarnation of the tale will emerge – just a matter of executing it with all its layers.
