Joel and Ethan Coen to dabble in horror?

Ah, those cheeky Coen brothers. If they’re not dooming their characters to lives of existential tragedy or holding a magnifying glass over them as if they were soon-to-be-ignited ants, they’re cracking wise with film journalists.

In an interview with Empire, Ethan Coen discussed potential future projects. Although he dismissed the long-touted Barton Fink sequel Old Fink (“the whole thing may be more a thought experiment than a movie”), he suggested the duo might move to the realm of horror.

When asked by Empire if they would consider doing a “full-on horror, Coen replied;

“Funny you should ask, yes, we’re working on a couple of scripts now, one of which it would be fair to call a full-on horror movie. Frances McDormand is the monster.”

Empire state that, based on his tone of voice, Coen was joking about the last part (not sure if Joel, McDormand’s husband, would appreciate the crack). But was he serious about writing the horror script, or was it merely the set-up for the joke?

With the Coens, you never really know. Still, fun to ponder.

The closest thing we have to a new Coen film is the Michael Hoffman-directed remake of Gambit that the brothers’ penned.
