Will Anne Hathaway join the cast of the musical Rock of Ages? Deadline New York is reporting the Oscar nominated actress is in talks with director Adam Shankman to star opposite Tom Cruise, who has officially signed on.
Rock of Ages will be an adaptation of the Tony Awards winning Broadway musical of the same name. It’s described as a “hilarious, feel-good love story” set to a soundtrack of classic rock songs. From Journey’s ‘Don’t Stop Believin’ (made popular again by those hip Glee kids), to ‘I Want to Know What Love Is’, ‘The Final Countdown’, ‘We Built this City’ and ‘More Than Words’ – yep it’s basically Gold 104.3: The Movie.
As the lyrics to ‘Don’t Stop Believin’ go, the film will tell the story of a small town girl and a city boy who meet in 1987 and fall in love in one of L.A.’s greatest rock venues to the greatest songs of the 80s.
If Hathaway takes the role, she’ll play an uptight journalist who seeks to bring down debauched rock star Stacee Jax (Cruise) but finds herself falling for him instead (isn’t that always the way?). Hathaway has proven on more than one occasion that she has the vocal chords to pull off a musical but we’re more than a little intrigued how Cruise will fare and how the two will work as an onscreen couple.
Other names attached or rumoured to be attached to the film are Russell Brand (this guy gets around) and Alec Baldwin, who are set to play the manager and the owner of the aforementioned “greatest rock club” respectively. The two will share a duet – REO Speedwagon’s ‘Can’t Fight This Feeling’ – which is perhaps the most exciting news of this whole post.
Whether Hathaway takes the role will mainly depend on her availability, after signing on for Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Night Rises as Selina Kyle / Catwoman.
If you want to catch the Broadway show that inspired the movie you have two options; fly thyself to New York or fly thyself to Melbourne – it opens in April 2011!
