Tommy Wiseau: Writer, actor, director, cheat? Should Wiseau strike ‘director’ from his resume? Entertainment Weekly (via Slashfilm) is reporting that “our favourite customer” from The Room may not have done as much directing on the cult film as his director credit has led us to believe.
Script Supervisor on The Room, Sandy Schklair, has come out in a huff declaring he ended up directing the majority of the film as Wiseau got too caught up in his acting to “talk to the actors”, “yell ‘Action’ and ‘Cut’”, “tell the cameraman what shots to get” and “make sense of the script”. (As though one could make sense of The Room’s script!)
Schklair’s claims have been backed up by one of the film’s actors, who chose to remain anonymous and said, “The script supervisor ended up sort of directing the movie. Tommy was so busy being an actor that this other guy directed the whole thing.”
Wiseau has, of course, denied these claims saying, “I will never give this guy credit. He did not direct the movie. He was hired as a script supervisor. If he was my assistant, so be it. But direct? I don’t think so.” (We imagine it sounded a bit like this…)
So, was Schklair responsible for creating one of the best worst movies ever? According to him he “embraced” the awfulness of the script and amplified the comedy beyond what Wiseau could have done. Surprisingly, Schklair left the production after only a month, but upon seeing how big a hit the film has since become he was convinced by a current co-star to tell his story. Smells a little fishy to us!
