Sequel to The Fighter in the works?

O.K., it’s not often we discuss throwaway comments made on the red carpet, but this one seemed too good to pass up. At the Academy Awards, Mark Wahlberg revealed to Extra that he is interested in making a sequel to The Fighter.

The David O. Russell-directed feature picked up two Oscars at the ceremony, for Supporting Actors Christan Bale and Melissa Leo. It also scored nominations in the Best Picture and Best Director category, and is looking to cross the $100 million mark at the U.S. box office.

There is a lot of love out there for the film, which documents the true tale of boxer Micky Ward (Wahlberg) and his crack-addled trainer/brother Dicky (Bale).

However, many reviewers noted the absence of Ward’s most famous fights in the film – his three bouts with the legendary Arturo Gatti.

Perhaps they were saving it for Part Two, as Wahlberg revealed to Extra:

“Now we’re gonna talk about doing No. 2. We’re gonna do the Ward /Gatti trilogy and make it real.”

On the Creative Screenwriting podcast, the film’s writers revealed that they had originally intended to open with Dicky’s fights against Sugar Ray Leonard in the 1970s, and end with the Ward/Gatti trilogy. However, budget cuts, and the realisation that it would be a downer to end on a bout Ward ultimately lost, meant the film was tightened up.

So, in a hypothetical situation in which Russell, Wahlberg, Bale, Leo and Amy Adams are all available…

Discuss: Would you like to see The Fighter 2: Still Fightin’?
