DreamWorks prep Julian Assange biopic

There’s nothing more immediate these days than the mire of information available via the Internet and the poor old movies just can’t move fast enough to catch up. As reported on Vulture, the studios are rushing around to put out a biopic on Wikileaks founder Julian Assange.

Already in the ring is an Alex Gibney–directed documentary, an HBO movie and Mark Boal and Paul Greengrass’s two movie developments.

The latest addition to the list is DreamWorks’s new project; the studio has just optioned the movie rights to two books for development. The first is Inside WikiLeaks: My Time With Julian Assange at the World’s Most Dangerous Website, written by Daniel Domscheit-Berg, a former WikiLeaks executive. The second is WikiLeaks: Inside Julian Assange’s War on Secrecy, written by David Leigh and Luke Harding, who were responsible for publishing Assange’s leaks in the UK’s widely read left-leaning newspaper, The Guardian.

Steven Spielberg, who is a partner at DreamWorks, and co-chairman and CEO Stacey Snider are reported to not be working on the project. No directors or producers have yet been attached to either of the films and, as is the case with all things Internet, the story is bound to grow and change direction again and again before production is even scheduled, let alone begins. More as it comes to light – via Twitter, Facebook, Wiki and any other site out there reporting the updates!

Discuss: With the time it takes to make a movie and get it distributed can DreamWorks really move fast enough to get Assange up on the big screen?
