They say the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting a different result each time. I’m not exactly sure who “they” are, but perhaps it’s time they sat down Universal and had a bit of a chat.
According to Bloody Disgusting, Universal is looking to reboot one of the classic films from their back catalogue: George Waggner’s 1941 monster movie The Wolf Man. Never mind that they already did this – last year no less – with director Joe Johnston and Benicio Del Toro.
That version of The Wolfman barely made back its $150 million budget, and received an absolute critical drubbing (we even named it the worst film of the year – congrats again!) after years of pre and post production delays, director replacements, rating controversies and finally, a disastrous retooling in the edit suite.
However, it’s likely that the film’s recent Oscar win (for Best Makeup, relax) has seen a resurgence of interest in the film, and Universal are now searching for screenwriters to pen a direct-to-DVD reimagination.
Will a quick-and-dirty DTD remake honour the 1941 original better than Benicio’s monstrosity? Hey, probably. Seriously, that film is really bad.
