Julianne Moore will play Mother Malkin – the most dangerous witch in the 1700’s – to Jeff Bridges’ master exorcist “The Spook” in The Seventh Son, Entertainment Weekly reports.
The two actors were last seen on screen together in the Coen brothers’ 1998 cult hit The Big Lebowski. As some have pointed out, in Lebowski Bridges played “The Dude”, and in their latest film together he will play “The Spook” (though this film is not likely to contain bowling, Viking hats or breast plates).
The Seventh Son will be adapted from Joseph Delaney’s dark fantasy series The Wardstone Chronicles, affectionately called “The Spooks Books”. The series is about 13-year-old Tom Ward, the seventh son of a seventh son who, as the myth goes, has special powers, such as sensing “creatures of the dark” and other things that your regular Joe can’t see. He trains as a Spook to learn to deal with the dark, and to battle and exorcise demons. The film will be based on the first novel in the series, The Spook’s Apprentice, with likely sequels to follow based on its success.
The film will be directed by Sergey Bodrov (Mongol) and released by Warner Brothers, who are no doubt hoping to jump back into the magic market after the disappointing – though by no means a disaster – Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. No word on who will take the role of young Spook Tom Ward, with possible candidates rumoured to be holding out for roles in the upcoming The Hunger Games adaptation.
