Pattinson, Timberlake and Garfield in line for Akira remake?

Deadline New York has revealed a shortlist of young male Hollywood talent being considered for roles in the upcoming adaptation of Katsuhiro Otomo’s graphic novel Akira.

Akira will be based on the 1988 Japanese anime, which itself was based on director Otomo’s own graphic novel of the same name. Whereas the original was set in Neo-Tokyo, a futuristic, post-war city in 2019, directors Albert and Allen Hughes’ version will be set in a rebuilt “New Manhattan”.

In Akira, Kaneda is the leader of a biker gang known as The Capsules and is best friends with Tetsuo, until Tetsuo abuses his psychic powers and the two become enemies. Kaneda, our hero if you will, must stop Tetsuo from releasing Akira who, after starting World War III was cryogenically frozen, and is said to have extreme psychic powers.

In regards to the much anticipated live action adaptation, all fans’ eyes are on who will embody the two main roles. For Tetsuo, Deadline lists Robert Pattinson, Andrew Garfield and James McAvoy as having been given the script. For the role of Kaneda they list Garrett Hedlund, Michael Fassbender, Chris Pine, Justin Timberlake and Joaquin Phoenix.

For someone unfamiliar with these characters it’s hard to comment on who seems most appropriate from this more than able list of actors – and I kind of wish I’d listened to my brother all those years ago when he repeatedly told me ‘You have to watch this!’. Suffice to say I’d wager fans will not be happy if Twilight poster boy Robert Pattinson is given a lead role but surely Justin Timberlake would fall into this category of pseudo actors also?

Warner Brothers and Legendary Pictures bought the rights to Akira two years ago for a high seven-figure sum and production is set to begin this coming August. More news on casting as it comes to hand.

Discuss: Who would you like to see star in the Akira remake?

  1. >As a fan of AKIRA, let me just saw what surely everyone else is thinking:Yes, these are all fine actors (well, mostly), but how can they convincingly play TEENAGE HOOLIGANS?!
