Jason Reitman does not think you’ll like his new film

When your first three films were critically adored box office hits, it’s probably  a wise move to lower people’s expectations about your upcoming flick.

Jason Reitman did just that at a Reynolda Film Festival Q&A, where he shared some choice quotes regarding his upcoming collaboration with Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody, titled Young Adult.

According to It’s Just Movies, Reitman said that “it may be the most unlikable film he’ll ever make”.

The film stars Charlize Theron as an unsympathetic ghost writer who heads to her hometown to rediscover her identity, and in the process tries to steal her former high school boyfriend (Patrick Wilson) away from his happily married existence.

Says Reitman:

“It’s not in a charming ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ kind of way but in a ‘Greenberg’ or ‘Rachel Getting Married’ kind of way. We had a screening of it recently and a girl in the focus group said, ‘I don’t know why Jason Reitman wants me to feel this way.’ So get ready for that fun! But don’t worry, ‘Juno’ is on DVD. You can always watch that afterward and feel good again.”

So, look forward to that!

Discuss: Now, I’d argue that Reitman has already delivered three seemingly unlikable (but eventually lovable) protagonists, but I guess we’ll wait and see what tricks he has up his sleeve here…

  1. I don’t know if it’s just me but it sounds a little like My Best Friend’s Wedding but without the comedy.
