Trailer Debut: Anonymous

The trailer for Roland Emmerich‘s Elizabethan thriller Anonymous has debuted online. The film suggests (as has long been rumoured) that the works of William Shakespeare were in actuality penned by Banksy, I mean, Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford.

Now, Emmerich is not the first director you think of as prime candidate to bring the all-time legendary question of artistic authorship to the big screen (unless the true author is revealed to be an alien, which it well might be).

That being said, Emmerich has recruited an impressive, if a little obvious, cast: Vanessa Redgrave, Rhys Ifans, David Thewlis, Sir Derek Jacobi.

Check out the trailer and share your thoughts below!

Anonymous arrives in U.S. cinemas September 30, 2011, with an Australian release to follow.

Discuss: Can Emmerich pull off a thoughtful period piece?
