Tobey Maguire cast in Life of Pi

Tobey Maguire is set to co-star in Ang Lee’s adaptation of Yann Martel’s bestselling novel Life of Pi, according to Variety.

Many have tried adapting the novel since its release back in 2001, yet it is only now getting off the ground. The story follows the son of a zookeeper, an Indian boy named Piscine “Pi” Molitor Patel, who after a shipwreck manages to survive on a dilapidated lifeboat with a hyena, zebra, orangutan and a Bengal tiger for 227 days.

Maguire has been cast as the writer who interviews the adult Pi about his experience. The titular role of young Pi has gone to an unknown, Suraj Sharma, a Delhi high school student. Other names to join the cast are French film staple Gerard Depardieu as Chef, Irrfan Khan (Slumdog Millionaire) as the adult Pi, Adil Hussain as Pi’s father and Bollywood star Tabu as Pi’s mother.

Ang Lee signed on to the project back in 2009 after several directors bowed out, including M. Night Shyamalan. Initial budget issues have apparently been worked out, as well as a new screenplay by David Magee (Finding Neverland), and Fox is reported to be allocating $50 million plus, on this 3D fantasy adventure.

Discuss: Looking forward to Lee’s adaptation?
