Green Day’s American Idiot heading to big screen

First it was an album, and then a Broadway musical. Now it looks as if Green Day’s American Idiot will be turned into a feature film for Universal Pictures. According to Deadline, Oscar-winning Milk screenwriter Dustin Lance Black is adapting the stage show into a movie.

The Broadway musical translated the tracks from Green Day’s hit 2004 album into a coming-of-age tale about three guys living in a small town.

Michael Mayer, who directed the show on Broadway, will helm the film.

Universal Pictures are likely looking to replicate the success of 2007’s Mamma Mia, which was based upon the stage show of the same name and incorporated the hits of ABBA.

Discuss: We haven’t seen the stage show, so we can’t really comment on whether the story will suit a feature film. What say you?
