Jason Statham to follow in Mel Gibson’s footsteps for Parker

Jason Statham is in talks to star as Parker in an adaptation of Donald Westlake’s crime novel saga of the same name.

According to Variety, the Taylor Hackford directed feature would star Statham as an honourable, yet dangerous, thief.

The first book of Westlake’s Parker series (published under the pseudonym Richard Stark) was The Hunter, which was previously adapted (loosely) as Point Blank, Full Contact and Payback. The films each starred Lee Marvin, Chow Yun Fat and Mel Gibson respectively as the Parker character (although christened differently).

John J. McLaughlin, one of the co-writers of Black Swan, has penned the script. The producers will shop the film at Cannes next month.

Discuss: A good fit for Statham, or is it time he tried to stretch himself?

  1. Be still my beating heart. I could watch him read the phone book. This is a good fit for him.
