Saoirse Ronan (Atonement, Hanna) has scored the lead role in the upcoming adaptation of Stephanie Meyer’s follow up to the Twilight saga, The Host.
According to Deadline, Ronan is attached to a package that also includes a script by Andrew Niccol (Gattaca, The Truman Show). Deadline also suggests Niccol might direct.
The film’s executive producers, Inferno, will take the pitch to Cannes next week, where it will no doubt be one of the most sought after titles in the yearly bidding frenzy that goes on behind the scenes of the actual festival.
Ronan would star as Melanie Stryder, a human doing battle with an alien species known as Souls. These Souls invade human bodies and erase their host’s personalities. Sorry, isn’t this just Invasion of the Body Snatchers?
Minor spoiler alert!
I’ve read (and enjoyed) the book. But I have concerns about how the movie will resolve the internal dialogue that goes on in the main character’s head. And it’s not just a symbolic dialogue, it’s an *actual* dialogue. Still, looking forward to seeing how they treat the whole movie. And yes, I guess there’ll be plenty of opportunities for guys getting their gear off, if that’s what rocks your boat.
On the surface the book is derivative of invasion of the body snatchers but the moral and ethical implications of one species dominance over another is one of the main features of the story. Invasion of the body snatches does not explore the ‘reality’ of the invading organisms. Their personalities, their thought patterns and the way they think and feel. It will be interesting to see how they will handle the internal dialogue. I have always felt that Judd Hirsche would make a great Uncle Jeb.
There is some very munchable man meat in the movie. Ian and Kyle. Jared. Good choice morsels. Hey that is some thing to thank Stephanie Myers for; the plethoria of eye candy that comes from her stories!
