Trailer Debut: Martha Marcy May Marlene

The transfixing trailer for Sundance favourite and Cannes-bound thriller Martha Marcy May Marlene has landed online. It stars Elizabeth Olson (yes, sister to the twins) as a young woman who escapes from a cult and their mysterious leader (Oscar nominee John Hawkes).

The directorial debut from Sean Durkin, Martha Marcy May Marlene was one of the most buzzed about flicks at Park City earlier this year, and was purchased by Fox Searchlight before the fest was even over. The film will play in the Un Certain Regard competition at Cannes this month.

If the trailer is any indication, the film seems to bear a few visual similarities to last year’s big Sundance winner and eventual Best Picture nominee Winter’s Bone (which also featured an astoundingly good lead performance from a young woman, and a terrifying turn from Hawkes). Of course, this one looks more like a psychological thriller than Winter’s Bone (which was more of a gum-shoe film noir set in the Mississip’).

Regardless, we’re incredibly excited to catch it when it hits Australian cinemas (hopefully sooner rather than later). In the meantime, check out the trailer below.

The tongue-twistingly titled Martha Marcy May Marlene also stars Sarah Paulson and Hugh Dancy.

Discuss: Could this be the next big breakout indie hit?
