Could a prequel to The Godfather be in the works?

Maybe! Mario Puzo, author of bestseller The Godfather and Oscar-winning screenwriter of Francis Ford Coppola’s film adaptations, had been working on a prequel script called The Family Corleone before his death in 1999.

The Puzo estate has finally authorised writer Ed Falco to turn the 1930s-set screenplay into a book, which would follow Don Vito Corleone’s rise and rise in the criminal underworld.

The novel is expected for publication in 2012 by publisher Grand Central.

So, does this mean we’ll get another Godfather flick in the next few years? Although film rights will likely be snapped up immediately, I wouldn’t hold out hope for a Godfather reboot. As the BBC reminds us, Puzo penned two sequels to The Godfather himself – The Sicilian in 1984 and Omerta, posthumously, in 2000 – that are yet to be adapted for the screen. Not to mention Mark Winegardner’s own Godfather sequels – The Godfather Returns and The Godfather’s Revenge.

Perhaps this is the one blue chip franchise Hollywood is too afraid of tainting with another instalment.

Discuss: Would you like to see The Family Corleone on the big screen?

  1. Didn’t the 2nd Godfather have a prequel sequence in it? Is this prequel going to start after that one?
