First look at Almodóvar’s The Skin I Live In

The 2011 Cannes film festival is getting closer, and all those films we’ve been eagerly anticipating – The Tree of Life, Sleeping Beauty, Melancholia, Drive, This Must Be The Place – are all set to compete for the prestigious Palme d’Or. Also in competition for the top prize is Pedro Almodóvar newie, The Skin I Live In, which, frankly, looks insane.

Antonio Banderas stars as Robert Ledgard, a plastic surgeon who creates a new skin for his burn-victim wife (Elena Anaya). The film is based upon the novel Tarantula by Thierry Jonquet.

No one would ever accuse Almodóvar  (or rather, Almodóvar!) of shying away from melodrama, but the first short clip released from the film looks mighty intense, even for him. Check it out, and share your thoughts below.

So, yeah!

The film doesn’t yet have an Australian release date. Hopefully details of international distribution will be revealed after it screens on the Croisette.

Discuss: A fan of Almodóvar, or is just all a bit too Telemundo for your liking?
