Family Guy creator to reboot The Flintstones

Family Guy creator Seth McFarlane has just closed a deal with Fox to reboot The Flintstones for both the small and big screen. The news was broken by Deadline and later confirmed at the 20th Century Fox 2011 Upfront.

It is unknown what kind of approach McFarlane will take when rebooting the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon, which followed Fred Flintstone, wife Wilma, kids Pebbles and Bam-Bam and neighbours Barney and Betty Rubble during prehistoric times.

The rightholders to The Flintstones were reportedly troubled by McFarlane’s reputation for raunchy cartoon comedies (he is also responsible for American Dad and The Cleveland Show), so it seems likely that his adaptation will be closer to G rated than his previous efforts.

At the Upfront, McFarlane revealed that the characters would still look the same. He also suggested that the original show’s use of animals/dinosaurs as technological tools would remain: “What is the animal version of an iPad?” What indeed!

The Flintstones will return to TV screens in 2013.

Discuss: I’m no fan of Family Guy, but I realise that I’m in the minority. Do you think McFarlane can do The Flintstones justice?

  1. Just as long as the dinosaur appliances continue to crack wise and they continue the tradition of rock-based puns, then this reboot could be a hit with stoners all over this great big rock of ours. I think this is slated to be a great success.
