The trailer for the remake of 1985 teen vampire movie Fright Night – starring Colin Farrell as a vamp who moves next door to Anton Yelchin and Toni Collette – has debuted online.
Apart from the fact that the trailer for the film – which was shot in 3D – looks a tad generic and overproduced and empty of the comedy/ cheesiness of the original, my main gripe with the remake is that the evil villain (named Jerry) is not very…scary. He’s more…handsome. And Irish. If this dude moved in next door to me, I’d be like ‘Right on!’ and I’d ditch whoever my lame high school jock boyfriend was and shack up with Jerry.
Farrell dismisses any softness in his portrayal of Jerry in a recent interview, claiming the Jerry in the remake is way more scary than the original: “He’s absolutely savage. A serial killer, aggressive, powerful – and he gets off on that. He has no sense of longing, no need for love or companionship.” Hm, can’t say I’m convinced!

Regarding the serious look of the trailer: Director Craig Gillespie certainly didn’t disappoint in the humour stakes with Lars and The Real Girl, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse (playing protagonist Charlie Brewster’s buddy Evil Ed) is sure to have been cast for his oddball comedic talent, so there might be some latent charm that will emerge in the actual film after all.
Fright Night hits Australian cinemas August 18, 2011.
