Sinister version of The Little Mermaid heading to cinemas

Whilst as a ten year old, Disney’s The Little Mermaid was all fun and games “unda da sea’, when you think about it, it’s actually quite a freaky film. There’s a gargantuan, evil, purple octopus woman, killer sharks, talking, hyperactive tripping crabs and a heroine who gets muted and has constant pain in her ‘new’ legs. It’s all quite unsettling.

Mermaid – author Carolyn Turgeon’s take on the original Hans Christian Anderson tale that Disney adapted – recognises the darkness in the original Danish fairytale and runs with it; the key mermaid character is not only creepily obsessed with souls, but, in one section of the book, gets her tongue brutally ripped out. The new tale also introduces a princess who undertakes a dangerous journey to find and marry the prince of her country’s rival kingdom (the same prince the key mermaid character has sacrificed everything to be with).

Variety reports that filmmaker Shana Feste (Country Strong, The Greatest) has been enlisted by Sony Pictures to write and direct a feature film based on Mermaid. Country Strong producers Tobey Maguire and Jenno Topping are on board to produce. Considering the last ‘dark fairytale’ remake we saw, Red Riding Hood, didn’t exactly send tingles up our spine, here’s hoping Mermaid lands in more Guillermo del Toro-style, ‘intelligent sinister’ territory.

Discuss: Who would you like to see play the ‘Mermaid’ character?
